Diesel engines, steam turbines and mechanical engineering

The company's history spans more than 250 years and it was a pioneer right from the beginning. The origins of MAN date back to 1758, when the St Antony ironworks were founded at Oberhausen. This marked the birth of the coal and steel industry in Germany's Ruhr region. Between 1893 and 1897, the inventor Rudolf Diesel and MAN engineers developed the world's first diesel engine at its Augsburg premises. MAN constructed its first steam turbine way back in 1904.
